Hey, everyone! I'm Lynn (they/them pronouns, please).

Like everyone else, it seems (:P), I found out about this forum from /r/unixporn but my love of UNIX can be traced back waaaay further than to when I first discovered unixporn. Way back in, gosh, I think 5th or 6th grade (I'm a freshman in college now), I asked my step-grandpa about the Linux books he had on his bookshelf. He didn't know too much about Linux himself, so we both started to see what we could learn about it. I deleted the Windows partition on my cruddy old laptop in 6th or 7th grade and I haven't looked back since. Since highschool, I've been trapped in the wonderful prison that is distrohopping. From Ubuntu to Fedora, from Fedora to Arch, from Arch to Gentoo, and from Gentoo to Void (I also had a brief OpenBSD phase but I had to drop it due to compatibility issues). Now I'm starting to plan out an LFS build with musl and suckless userland. Or maybe FreeBSD (love the BSD philosophy and FreeBSD has better software and hardware compatibility, as I understand). Idk. It probably doesn't need to be said because of those last few sentences, but I'm a real sucker for minimalism, in both visual and software design.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm now in college. However, unlike most UNIX nerds, I'm not actually a CS major, I'm a math and physics double major. However, I think my obsession with elegance bridges the gap between my interests in UNIX and math and physics. (I also still like to program, it's just that the commercial side of programming does not appeal to me at all).

Anyway, I really look forward to chatting with y'all on here and on the IRC. :) This looks like a pretty cool community and it seems like I share the same visual and software design philosophy as almost everyone on here. See ya around!

(Also, sidenote, how do you set your signature on here? I can't for the life of me seem to find it in the User CP.)

That's a novel way to learn about Linux!

Can't really judge if you never tried. Maybe you're seeing it as a bystander that way.

Welcome to the forums gigavinyl.

Welcome to nixers!

Why do you use Linux instead of UNIX? Given that you consider yourself to be a "UNIX lover", I am confused.
But I like your choice of Linux distributions.

Ahoy! Welcome to nixers.

How did your step-grandpa get on learning Linux? Should we expect to see him on the forums as well... or is he already here..?

I could do with a shot of rum right now.

That's a good point. My interests have pushed me in the direction of academia, however. Although it's not uncommon, from what I understand, for math and physics majors to get scientific software engineering jobs so maybe I'll get to see how I like the industry that way? :)

I mostly use Linux because the BSD I've tried, OpenBSD, has some compatibility issues with the software I use (Steam, notmuch, real-time music software, etc.). However, I think I'm going to try FreeBSD and see if it has sufficient compatibility for me. I really like the BSD code style, documentation, and better apparent adherence to the UNIX philosophy so I hope FreeBSD works out for me. :)

He uses Linux on his old laptop but he still uses Windows on his main machine. Also, he doesn't really use the internet much so probably not but you never know. :)

Thanks for the welcome, everyone :)

Sounds like a man who shoots straight and tell the truth!

If you go LFS, it would be really interesting to see your process and progress, perfect entries for the unix diary thread.

the commercial side... That side is actually quite interesting when you have house, kids, bills and stuff like that.

What's your preferred shell and wm?

And welcome! (unlike most UNIX nerds i'm a highschool dropout who spent my twenties chronically stoned without computers at all)

It looks like *nixers gather the interest of some /r/unixporn readers into unix.

I started distro hopping 2 years ago, never stopped since, and I have no intention to stop. :D

Well OK I'm a bit settled down with OpenBSD right now... With good portable softwares, it gets a pleasure.

I wish you to enjoy LFS, I did never try tbh.

numixporn links to nixers on their related websites page: https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/wiki/links/external

Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be staying on OpenBSD for a little while :P. I figured out some alternatives to the compatiblity issues I was having.

Thats true. :P Hopefully I won't be too dirt-poor in academia.

I really love OpenBSD's implementation of pdksh. No nonsense, super clean and fast. The OpenBSD way :). Right now I'm using 2bwm but I miss dynamic tiling so I think I'm gonna try to set something up with wmutils when I have the time.

Yeah...I've hopped back on the OpenBSD train and boy, is it good to be back. My habit of tailoring my the software I use to just stuff that works on OpenBSD should be a testament to my dedication :P.
