ASCII & ANSI Art - The Unix Style - venam - 26-02-2016
Hello fellow nixers,
This thread is about ascii and ansi arts.
This kind of art style is common and "hype" around the Unix community.
From display scripts such as archey and screenfetch to custom made ones.
We had a thread close to this subject but not enough in depth talk.
In this thread we'll post the custom ASCIIs and ANSIs we've made, link others to cool websites, and discuss techniques and softwares used to create such arts, and any other related content (books, movies, etc..).

As far as the technique goes I'm no experts, I "draw" from scratch. I'd love to hear if others have specific techniques or programs that do the job cleanly. I tried cadubi but didn't go deep enough with it.

The typewriter stuff has existed for a long time. I've seen murals done via that method. It's stunning. I'm not sure if back in the day I saw it on Ripley's Believe it or Not, but definitely on some Guiness Book of World Records special on TV.
I too am also interested in how people design it, freehand must take quite a long time.

I bet that a large portion is drawn manually. True Artists (™) don't need tools.

Use monospace font
Start with a canvas (a text file filed with spaces)
Characters differences, shades, effects:

Then try polish and not leave any gap.

This is gonna be my weekend project: Spend my time applying the ascii-art techniques and try to come up with a new robot for my collection.
I won't try the ANSI art yet.
Couldn't wait, I had to try things out a bit.
It's super fun.
I took a picture, drew the outline with a thick line and made the terminal transparent.
Now I'm just following the tips I've posted above.

I'm using two term emulators in that screenshot, the transparent one is xterm and the one on the right is urxvt.
I remember there were issues with urxvt and the XCB library, for example the depth that removed the borders.
