A Curated Newsletter - venam - 04-12-2016

Hello fellow Nixers,
This thread is for discussing the Nixers curated newsletter.

We jump on irc and many of us share topics and ideas; things we just discovered and find interesting. We all work on different kinds of projects and hold different opinions on a multitude of things.

Almost every community or institution possesses their own curated newsletter.

This is a reflection of the group as a whole, our mini-expanding-filter-bubble-of-thoughts.

We share what we know around the topic of Unix and Unix-tech related as a whole.

* Interesting blog posts
* Projects done by community members
* Events
* Thoughts
* Jokes and Comics - update header of nixers
* Any kind of art related to Unix
* Reading recommendations
* etc..

This will unfold as follow:
Every week people can send the content to me by email, irc, forums PM and at the end of the week 10 of those are chosen to be featured in the newsletter.

The person curating the newsletter will rotate as soon as we get enough persons contributing.

The newsletters will be sent on weekends.

The source can be found here: https://github.com/nixers-projects/newsletter
You can sign up here: https://nixers.net/newsletter/
The feed for earlier newsletter (Going to post them one week after the newsletter get sent): https://nixers.net/newsletter/feed.xml

Cheers,

Sounds like, at the very least, a great way to crowdsource knowledge

I could help on the newbie section!

In whatever(likely limited) capacity I could, sure

I don't have any strong preference one way or the other. Let's get a MySpace page!

I'd assume something like the podcast; in that there's a discussion thread around a set of ideas/topic, which get fleshed out in the newsletter articles.

The magazine didn't take off because it takes many persons' effort.
A newsletter is just an aggregation of links, which is easier to do and doesn't require hours of work every week.

Well, z3bra and, to a lesser extent, myself are working on ratox, a distributed, encrypted messaging application
using the tox protocol.

The development is going on at http://git.z3bra.org/ratox/log.html. ratox uses the tox protocol (https://tox.chat) and the toxcore library (https://github.com/irungentoo/toxcore). Atm, one-to-one messaging, file sending and audio calling are possible, all encrypted via libsodium (https://nacl.cr.yp.to). So, if you want to test it, install toxcore, download ratox,
compile, read the manpage, and send a request to the id AA72C255E14A6214E0E368F5882A6B7CF235F8F3CCE0321EDBFBC5F2C065E3173337CFD9B594 (sorry z3bra, it changed again for some reason).

Wrong thread?

I thought this would qualify, but I can move it to the 'what are you working on' thread.

This thread is about the proposition of the newsletter, I was asking for opinions on this.
Yes, this would qualify as a project we could link to.

I'm thinking of using emails as a mean.
The workflow isn't very clear in my mind yet.
For the moment I'm just thinking of having people email me, or PM on the forums or irc with links they found interesting.
Then We'd have to setup a subscribe/unsubscribe page and a script to send the mail to everyone in the list.

We may also need to review the links to X number before sending them.

I'm unsure if we'll go with a pre-made solution or not.
What are your thoughts?

Perhaps a central source on unix material (links/books/etc)?

The problem lies in the quantity of responses regarding which source from all over the web. So a local place that nixers typically agree on being a good source of information for those wanting to learn more at the expense of not asking the same questions that im sure most on here or on other sites get tired of answering.
