Dzen/Conky setups - Phyrne - 09-10-2012

I just moved over to i3 yesterday and I'd like to get Dzen with Conky set up... however, I don't know where to start.

So perhaps, if you would be so kind, you could share your setups here. Not just for my greedy self of course, but to show off too ;)

Wow! Awesome job on hacking up xfce's panel! looks great :)

Yep, I'm certainly still interested in dzen. I wanna get a similar setup to the below image, I just want to be able to display my essential widgets (bat, wifi, clock, volume, mpd) with icons and fancy colours :P

RE: Dzen/Conky setups - Mafia - 09-10-2012

Yeah all you do is pipe your conky into dzen, it's actually quite easy once you start it.
I can't find my configs though, my laptop is broken and that's what I use for everything. Im on my gfs pc that I made for her, but it runs debian. I don't really touch it lol.

Yeah I just need a sort of base to go on, I'm sure i'll be able to pick it up from there! Ah that's no worries :)

RE: Dzen/Conky setups - Phyrne - 11-10-2012

I'm hoping someone might help me out with my dzen setup.

The two bars are supposed to be side by side as shown in this image:

Here's what mine looks like...

Here's the startup script.
Here's the clock widget. (supposed to be on the left)
And finally here's the 'bat' widget (supposed to be on the right).

I really hope someone can help me with this, many thanks in advance for any words :)

Looks like your dimensions are off. The X and Y positions, and lengths.

RE: Dzen/Conky setups - Phyrne - 11-10-2012

Hmmm, they should be set right?

xrandr gives:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 32767 x 32767
eDP1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 256mm x 144mm
   1366x768       60.0*+
   1024x768       60.0
   800x600        60.3     56.2
   640x480        59.9

Your dzen X and Y demensions. Like length, width, and screen placement.
Basically, make your left bar larger, half your screen I suppose. Then place your left bar all the way to the right, With Y I believe, and do the same in length.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be it either :/ No matter what size, or where I try to place them, the left bar always sits over the right. I'm guessing this is something to do with my wm, I'm using i3.

RE: Dzen/Conky setups - Mafia - 11-10-2012

Weird, I do know that if you put in a wrong dimension. Say your left edge of your screen is 10, and you go 5. It will revert to the stock position.

RE: Dzen/Conky setups - Phyrne - 11-10-2012

Hmm, no idea! Well, I've sort of got a work around in place, I removed the '-dock' from the left bar and ran it after a 5 second sleep. Works nicely, the only thing that bugs me is that if floating windows pass through it, it stays on top. Do you know of any switch to set dzen to set it to the bottom layer? (Perhaps this is something for the WM to handle)

Ah... it's definitely not a good work around. Fullscreen videos show the left bar :/

Can you recommend any alternatives to dzen? Perhaps ones that handle text aligment :P

RE: Dzen/Conky setups - Mafia - 11-10-2012

Like I said before, hack xfce4-panel :>
And you never told me you docked it xD, I know a workaround but it's for fvwm2. And nobody uses fvwm2 around here but me so you probably won't either :p

Yeah it was in my configs :P Aha, nope, I'm using i3!

Well hack xfce4-panel, like I said. Its good, stock is horribly ugly and stupid. But if you can hack it, it will work better or as good as any panel. You can message me if you need any help.
