I boot from a live usb and use dd to backup the system onto an external HDD. I try to do this regularly but i am very forgetfull..... Edit: Luckily i dont have anything of much value stored on my lap...

Very intresting! i also switched to a thinkpad from my mac, it would actually be quite usefull to switch between workspaces with the trackpoint and scrollbutton, will have to try this out.
