Hello fellow nixers,
This thread is about the recent events. Unexpectedly, yrmt left me in charge of administering the forums so I'm taking the opportunity to re-open the discussion we had on my "never-used" forums. In that respect, please do not take my current position as something that is impartial, I'm welcoming any useful ideas. For what happened to yrmt, he's simply hosting the forums and won't get involved in nixers.net activities anymore. In this thread we'll discuss the following:
--- My personal opinion (which you don't have to agree with): I think the "Desktop Customization" section of the forums could be re-branded as "Unixporn" related forum. It would need some changes that we might have to think about but overall it's a fair idea. Though I'm not so sure if people from the sub will come posting on the forums. As far as I'm concerned, the IRC activities should stay hosted by iotek. Up until now they've done a pretty good job administering it. If anyone wants to merge with the channel related to the community we can always find a smooth way to do it taking in consideration that the topic of the channels are related. I'd like to have a democratic administration from now on. I want more discussion threads and ideas flowing. I'm specifying from upfront that I won't and I swear to not take any parties or subjective decisions. This position is heavy and in consequence I'll refer to everyone before making changes. |

Well I wasn't expecting that. Are the forums back for good, or is it a temporary measure until a new home is found?

wth folks? I read the previous posts about what is going on and I can only say that there's a lot of bullshit going on that doesn't need to go on. That said, I think there isn't anything inherently flawed with the current forum structure. If you're going to recommend changes and want democratic process, then post the changes you'd recommend (short of renaming a sub to unixporn) and put up a poll. Just my $0.02. I'd suggest that each change be voted on by the membership, if you're going for more "community ownership".

The relation that /r/unixporn has with nixers.net
When we created UnixHub the mods on /r/unixporn were very inactive despite all of us using the subreddit. Just from talking to the users in IRC I would say that 60-75% of our users found UnixHub/Nixers through scrots in that subreddit. I think it would be safe to say 60-75% of our users browse/post to /r/unixporn (although I'm sure that number is dropping from the sudden influx of numix and Gnome shit.) Since the beginning of UnixHub and the subsequent creation of Nixers things have changed, we now have a great moderation staff at /r/unixporn who are much more involved in the community and are interested in growth. One of those aspects of growth would be a discussion forum as I've heard the mods talk about before. I think we can all agree that change and growth is positive if done correctly. And here is what it comes down to:

/r/unixporn mods want a discussion forum on unixporn.net

we have great discussion forums

60-75% of our users found UnixHub/Nixers through /r/unixporn

becoming the official /r/unixporn forums (a subreddit with 17,000 subscribers) would bring huge growth to the forum population and content

the growth for both communities outweighs whatever positives there are to keeping the "Nixer" name (which is less than a year old)

What is going to happen to the irc (merging or not merging) I love our IRC how it is now. If we could have the same thing with the "UnixPorn" name, I think it would be awesome. We could merge #nixers with #unixporn on Joom's server or move everyone into #unixporn on dcat's server. Either way, I think it's a step in the right direction. If you can think of any negatives please let me know. How nixers.net is going to be administered from now on I've noticed you've stripped me and dcat of our forum moderator / administrator labels, which is fine. And if all goes well, nixers.net wouldn't even be the name anymore. We would all be united under the unixporn.net name, UnixHub v2 almost. I think if you take the time to read everything I have said it's hard to disagree, unless you are just blatantly against growth, in which case I would question your leadership. Long live rice. |

I do agree that we have a lot of common with /r/unixporn sub reddit however there's a lot of things to take in consideration. Why would someone post on forums if they have a subreddit to post on? We have great discussion forums exactly because we don't post the same content that is posted on the sub. Anyhow, there's room for testing. In my opinion; merge all the channels and move to a larger network, like Freenode. I don't need any more servers in my irssi-config. |

I posted in the other thread, so I'll leave that there.
My only major concern is allowing the /r/unixporn mods to have a position of power. I'm sure they do a swell job with the subreddit, but none of them ever come to Nixers and some have even called it something along the lines of 'disgusting' and not somewhere they'd ever visit again. Why are we putting these people in charge? I personally think this merge could go really well, and end up feeling the same as #nixers, just with more people to talk to. That sounds great to me. But if we screw up the administration we'll just end up in more petty arguing very quickly. |

I'm going to build my own linux community, with blackjack and hookers.
Let's see how I see this `merge' idea: UNIXPORN
NIXERS
The idea behind this merge is (tell me if I'm wrong) : "Hey ! Here at unixporn we discuss linux things and post ricing related content, you do too, just come with us, and leave your community !" What would be the benefits of it ? You can suscribe to /r/unixporn if you're a nixers member, and you can join nixer.net if you're from /r/unixporn ! When you want to submit a screenshot, go to reddit, and to discuss the latest kernel release, to nixers.net. To make this forum more accessible from the subreddit, you can put a link in the sidebar, that's what the sidebar is made for after all. Another argument I heard is: "If both #nixers and #unixporn are on the same server, it will be easier for one community to get in touch with the other" Why not create the channels on freenode then ? So that it will be easier for the users of #linux to join us ! The problem here seems to be that the admins of the server will loose their full control on the IRC server. that's the only reason why this "merge" can't be. Joom will not abandon his server, as dcat. And that's totally understandable. This "privilege" or responsability is nice to have ! If I was running an IRC server for one of those two communities, I'd not want to just abandon it. Anyway, it's not THAT hard to add a server in an IRC client configuration... I bet that if you put something like this in the subreddit sidebar, both will get people :
I don't find this merge relevant in fact. Sure we are both interrested in the same subject, but the purpose of each "plateform" are totally different ! Wanna show of ? -> unixporn, wanna discuss ? -> nixers. There's no need for a merge here. It only needs to be more explicit. I totally agree that nixers and unixporn are complementary. But why not just link them together by promoting them ? And if after that, the need to group everything under the same domain name shows up, we'll discuss it. |

^ I totally agree, there is no need for a merge because they're two different/separate niche. Cheers venam for being the new admin.

Just to clarify on this, if we did have a merge I wouldn't want any power on the forums same as I wouldn't want those in charge of the forums to have power on the subreddit. As others have said the communities do have differences and an oversized mod team never looks good. (18-08-2014, 08:43 AM)z3bra Wrote: I totally agree that nixers and unixporn are complementary. The domain stuff only applied when nixers.net looked like being taken away, but that apparently isn't the case anymore. |

I like the idea that ricing related things will be unixporn, and nixers for the rest of unixy things

I agree with Z3bra. I think that if we are too hasty in merging both communities together. Personally I would keep things seperate, but continue to promote on a similar level. Speaking from experience, I found Nixers through /r/unixporn, and everyone here has been completely welcoming and friendly. Truth be told I dont see the point in a full out *merge* because both communities already have a large connection with each other. Both have different purposes, but nothing is stopping the nixers individuals from joining #unixporn and vice a versa. There is no barrier between the two they just serve different purposes. So overall I think we should just continue, and let everyone make their own decisions. I appreciate a place to voice my opinion, and I wish you all a great day!

nixers is basically "nixer school". We have opinionated discussions here. We influence each other, and other people. We are responsible for many trends in /r/unixporn. I think that we should look at ourselves this way. We're a relatively small community with all kinds of people, but we have achieved a lot, I think. I do not support a merge of the two communities because;
- /r/unixporn is not the same kind of a community as we are. We have a thread named "Show us your screenshots!" which is basically /r/unixporn of Nixers. And it's only a small part of the whole forum. - We are already actively in relations with /r/unixporn and the knowledge transfer is already huge. Subscribers of the subreddit already knows where to find us, and I'm pretty sure that those who come here will know that we are an entirely different community for different things, and they will stay here only if they are interested. Many people in /r/unixporn would be interested, but many wouldn't What's up with yrmt? Is he around? |

Apparently had some stressful stuff going on IRL so I don't begrudge him that, but it left nixers.net in quite an unstable position. We didn't even know if we'd get to keep the domain name. As it stands he's said he'll keep the domain running, so now the merger is just really about the IRC rooms as far as I know. yrmt says he's not coming back, hence venam being in charge. |

There's a lot that has been said in this thread. We've reached a conclusion from both parties.
Thank you all for saying what you had in mind. Here are the results from the survey I did on /r/unixporn https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1...sp=sharing. This shows that around 70% of unixporn don't want and won't contribute to forums and that 70% really don't care about irc or don't want any merge. Putting aside most of the comments in this thread, it displays what's going to happen. To recap everything: Most of /r/unixporn don't want to deal with forums. Most /r/unixporn is there just to brag about scrots. /r/unixporn don't care about ircs so don't expect anything special from a merge. Merging the ircs would complicate things. Nixers.net is more than just ricing, it's a whole community experience. If anyone wants to join then let them join instead of starting a side-forum just for that. Nixers.net influence /r/unixporn and /r/unixporn influences Nixers.net. Some people never learn, are tyranic, and are forceful. When trust is lost, trust is lost. Changing forums names, rebranding, etc.. all that means loosing friends along the way. Listening to the mods demands without asking the community ought to turn into harsh and unreasonable decisions. Less uptime means less credibility. Don't follow people that starts a rush of destruction, it might sound cool but it's not. Drama is lame. The forums are going to stay the same and so is the IRC. Feel free to start threads about new ideas you have in mind, start new community projects, discuss interesting subjects, dig old threads where we haven't had enough discussion about, ect.. For example: Z3bra started this "Unix Diary" thread, why not contribute. Help with the "ricer" project info, it still needs a little bit of work and it'll be done. Where did that "Unix challenge" thread go? I'll close this thread but you can always re-open a new one if you want to re-discuss the situation. Love you all ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ |
