In this thread you can ask questions and talk about the podcast.

This is a very nice idea.
I would be in for a once-per-2-weeks talk about specific topics, or news headlines, or maybe about criticizing certain setups.
All of that should be done in the hipster, nixers, high quality way we are used to.

I guess it would turn out to be very entertaining as long as we are organized.

I think the key is to be organised so that there is always something to talk about. However if it is going to be an entertaining podcast it will have to be a little less informal. In a way that it isn't just reading from a script. And or course it will have to be done in the hipster nixers way.

BSDNow is another podcast I enjoy. I don't think there exists a podcast about ricing, it's a cool idea.

OK. The first thing I was thinking was to get a general idea of the format of the show.By this I mean what will actually happen in the show. This may also effected by how many people or who is on the podcast. For example if we had a segment on news this could be divided into segments such as bsd and linux. I was thinking we could have 'experts' who would talk more on a specific subject. However I didn't want to restrict anybody to anything. This I expect would be separate from the ricing information. I was thinking for the ricing people could talk about their current setup and what they are doing to their setup. There could also be some kind of featured setup.
Summary
-Short introduction OS's used and whatnot
-Possible news in Unix world
-The interesting ricing segment
-Maybe something
Let me know what you think. I think this could be something.

Excellent.
I would propose the following ideas:
 • Nixers internal news and events (irc included)
 • Interesting news related to *nix (must be well chosen to not be boring)
 • Explain your rice setup
 • Critics of top-post on /r/unixporn or other screenshots
 • Weird programs you discovered
 • Tips for good rice setup
 • *nix jokes/memes

We could also have a *nix diary but I'm not so sure about that.

EDIT:
How is this gonna take place?
With what technology/software?
We should agree on a specific time.
Will we have intro and outro musics?

I really like the idea of the Nixers internal news. That will definitely add and help build the community.
As to how the software I'm not entirely sure. I was thinking Google hangouts however this I feel will make releasing it as a traditional podcast much harder. Another option would be to record a skype call but this may result in a decrease in quality. But another way would be to record local audio streams and edit those together with the skype call as a sync guide. I think audacity is universally praised as a good audio editor so that will play some part.
A specific time should be agreed upon. This may depend on time zones.

It'd cooler to have something live that is also recorded, maybe using mumble.
Something similar to pauldotcom.com podcasts.

how about crowd sourcing? e.g. email/twitter/irc/reddit Q/A section. people love hearing their screen names read on a podcast.
RoastPotatoes

How exactly would this work? crowd sourcing I mean

I agree with it being a live show.

idk, people live tweet questions at the caster and they answer them. like a live Q/A. but they pick the questions they want/can answer.

That is a good idea. Google hangouts does have some kind of q and a feature

I like the mumble server idea, provided there is little latency (that could make things difficult).

I think maybe doing it "live" would be a little challenging (who knows what odd hours we would be doing this), but what about having people email things in throughout the week and during the podcast we pull it up and read from it?

This would act as a good alternative to the live show. If the show times are announced this will give the community time to send things in..

I propose tox. A skype alternative that's free (all terms). There are many different clients to it (kinda like IRC), and I'm aware of one (ratox for the curious) that would make the recording as easy as "cat call_out > record.wav".

One can create a group in tox, and invite people in it (like skype). If not, I have a mumble server that's up 24/7 (topped to 10 users though)

I like the idea of using tox but there doesn't seem to be a client that supports group audio chat.
Edit: oh wait, maybe there is

As a matter of fact, here is a Tox session between two clients: uTox and ratox: http://raw.z3bra.org/vid/tox-session.mp4

uTox is a light client written in C, really easy to use, and ratox is a fifo based client (kinda like ii, but for tox). I didn't have the occasion to try out tox live, so I'm not well organised when using ratox. that's why you can see windows everywhere :P (but it's demostrative enough for this presentation).

Side notes about the video:
 • you can't hear it, but the calls are working
 • I make use of rat-play and rat-record which are just aliases to aplay/arecord
 • I tried the ffmpeg command "live" to see what would happen. it failed. but it can obviously be done with the good flags
 • I'm not sure how those two would handle group calls. Why not try it live ?

I find tox to be a nice alternative to VoIP softwares, and it would definitely be nice to promote it by creating our podcasts with it. Who's with me ?

EDIT: found this page about features in clients... It seems that none of them actually support group audio at the moment...

The way of communication should be open for listening to anyone while broadcasting live but close to talking in, as in only specific persons should be able to send sounds.

I really like the idea of reviewing the top posts of /r/unixporn. +1 for that idea.

Well, I know how its gonna go. Bashing, bashing, bashing. Calling shitty everything , thus making us look like assholes. Nobody will want to listen to others casts afterwards.

I propose a review of a few WM. Or maybe just trying to find what the "ultimate WM" would be like

True, we could keep the bashing to a minimum, or have a dedicated podcast for each distro and spend equal time reviewing the pros and cons, and do the same with WM's... just an idea.

Here's the list of ideas until now:
 • Nixers internal news and events
 • Interesting *nix related news
 • Explain your setup
 • Weird *nix programs you've discovered
 • Ricing segment (tips of the day)
 • Philosophy - views of the world and changes
 • Q/A session - interview with some members
 • *nix jokes
 • WM reviews
 • Unix diary
 • Distro reviews

We're gonna set for mumble on a private server for the moment.
Then we'll check what we could do to make it better.

So, about the mumble thing. Just yesterday they added group audio chat support to uTox and qTox. And let me tell you, it's fucking great. The quality is amazing compared to mumble's quality. Here is the official blog post from the toxcore developers, if you scroll to the bottom you can listen to audio that has been sent over the group chat and recorded, I could barely tell the difference between that and the original copy.

I recommend that we at least try it out, we should set a date and time here pretty soon.

Yeah it's nice. But there's a downside: tox doesn't allow any kind of "voicing" restriction, and there is no recording in utox.

About the second point, I'm not affraid. after all, the devs managed to record themselves, so we can probably do the same. For the access, that's another story... maybe forward the call to somewhere else...

We still got a lot testing to do.

There should be support for muting individual users pretty soon, I've talked to some of the devs and they have already added a mute feature for the entire group, individual users shouldn't be too far off. I also wonder, will we really have a live audience? God knows what odd hours we will record at.

Instead of doing all of this at one specific moment in time, we should divide the podcast into the individual segments with people of a similar schedule or time zone. Then we will not have to worry about microscheduling everything and can easily just splice everything together later on. The individual segments could have a common topic like.... "Optimization of Keybindings", "Secrets of Vim", "BSD Secrets", etc.
