Hey,

the world of different messaging applications for phones is wide spreaded. The big four (i guess) are Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook, and Signal, but there are also messenger like Hangouts, Snapshat and so on.

So what do you think about the different apps? Which do you use if any and what do you think about the security side of these? Do you care about your privacy while using them?

I personally use Signal by OpenWhisperSystems, which is open source and provides an Android, iOS and Desktop App. The only thing I'm missing is a comfortable CLI application (this one is available, but it seems a bit clucky). But I dislike the dependency to GApps, since I like to avoid the big players in the internet.
Holy shit. This thing is actually alright once you flash AOSP. Did y'all know Amazon was putting ads on the lockscreen of this tablet? Flashing AOSP gets rid of that, of course, but...
So yeah, on top of AOSP, I'm running an adblocker, SuperSu, and almost always playing music in the background, and this Tablet works great. It was sluggish before flashing.

I was going to ask this question in the IRC, but seeing as it's down, you folks have very craftily succeeded in getting me signed up here :D

The Experiment:

I would like to know if it is possible to install Linux/BSD/any modern unix variant natively on an Android device, either on the device's internal storage or the SD card (or both).

I understand that it is possible with some phones, and may not be easily achievable on others.

I have a Kyocera RIse C5155 that I am prepared to risk bricking in the name of exploration to see if this can be done. If I can get a console and wifi connectivity working natively, I'll be happy.

Preferably, I'd like to put Debian ARM on the handheld because I have the most experience with Debian, but any modern unix/unix-like distribution would be an achievement as far as this experiment goes.

If anybody could tell me where to begin, or offer any insight, I'd greatly appreciate it.

This is weird coming from me, I usually ask my parents not to buy me anything but I am really fucking sick of this BlackBerry. I hate xmas, but this year I'm getting a free Android phone out of it. All I've got to do is fake a smile for a few hours infront of the family until I come across the phone probably later on. Then I'll be chuffed for real and i'll probably spend a few hours figuring shit out on it.

I've ordered some mint tea today on ebay for dirt cheap, It's supposed to help with relaxation of muscles. It helps you sleep, and it's used for pain relief and also relieves stress. The main reason i'm getting this is because of the de-stress, heartburn relief and ease of sleep. Thought I'd mention that because sterotypically most guys here stay up a lot and when they want to get to sleep.. they can't.
