I have to say I've tried a few screen casting applications such as record my desktop and there seem to be issues with all of the major ones including recording sound, format and quality.
Kazam screencaster is brilliant, it can decode straight to .mp4 and it has a fancy GUI. It records both sound and video in HQ, also if you log into steam and play a game or any fullscreen application it will still record. That's something I could not get out of the more successful screen casting apps. I now record with Kazam and edit with openshot to finalise and then publish the video to YouTube on my Crunchbang desktop. Thought you guys would find this useful, it doesn't seem to be very popular yet. https://launchpad.net/kazam |

Ffmpeg with the libx264 codec has always worked great for me, but I will surely look into this one.
