I originally found nixers through the amazing posts that you all would put up on /r/unixporn (and unixart)
I saw people who really knew how to tweak everything and took customization to a level deeper than installing numix icons.

Reddit for all of its benefits as a central hub for many communities is feeling a little small for me, I want to move towards dedicated forums instead of subreddits.

sp recently I have been looking around for other forums to fit my interests and so far it has been great.

I know there are some really nice communities over at:

Linuxbbq (I'll soon start posting there more)
lainchain has been alright so far (better than /g/ In my opinion)
deskauthority is a pretty nice place for keyboards

I find that a lot of linux distro forums are dead (see: alpine linux forums)
and that general forums such as linux questions or stack exchange are flooded with things that I do not want to read.
I have a limited amount of time and don't want to waste it on drivel.
That's one great thing about this place (quality)

So my question to you guys is this:
Do you frequent any other forums (other than this great one)
and do you have any suggestions for good forums that go along with my interests. Namely diy electronic, writing, knitting, other computer forums, literature, embedded systems etc

Also I should add:

I am also interested in good (English) blogs about tech, writing and travel.

lobsters is cool but it's invite only. check it out and if you like it I can email you an invite. I used to be active in a community called blinkenshell which is a lot like nixers, however they don't have an actual forum. but what they do have is shell accounts, which is what the community kind of revolves around.

Here are some (maybe well known sites) I just want to include here for completion:
www.cat-v.org (rants)
www.aiju.de (rants)
www.suckless.org (I guess you already knew that)
www.onethingwell.org
fll.presidentbeef.com

So, that's my contribution to this list.

Indeed, I've also found that and not only with Unix related communities.
Distro oriented forums are most of the time dead, maybe with the exception of ArchLinux and Ubuntu.
I'm not a big fan of those kinds. Their purpose is to resolve issues related to the distro.

Others like Unix.com, stack exchange, linux questions, etc.., are flooded by random people and random questions. They are the "Help Desks" of the Unix community. I'm not a big fan of those either as far as community is concerned.

I prefer smaller communities with a little bit of filtering on who's part of it, it strengthen the bonds between the members and the quality as a whole.

However, there's a limit to this. In some places the self-esteem of the individuals is too high and their standards are far from reality. Those groups are seen by others as "*ssh*l*s" and "elites".

I've been trying to find a good neo-punk-underground-hacker forum but without much findings. I've found a bunch that were almost dead but that seemed alive in the past.
I'm frequenting an IRC related to hacking challenges that also hosts an IRC-based mmorpg where we exchange "secret" info. But most of the day it's dead.

I'm browsing some online boards related to underground hacking.

There's a science magazine that I follow and I think we can say that there's some sort of community that regroups in the comments of the articles.

I think forums in general are going the way of the dodo, which is a massive shame because throughout my life (since I was roughly 12?) I've often been an active member in some kind of forum, I really enjoy the sense of community.

@kirby:
Well, in general that may be true, but people were always saying that about irc.
The groups that are using these technologies are shrinking, but they are still as active as before.

Really interesting website!

For the average person I think yes - Recently (or for awhile now) there has been a move towards bringing the 'real world' onto the internet.

As can be seen with the massive success of social networking.

While I don't know how this exactly impacts forums, It has set nasty precedents for online privacy and the like.

Here's a list of sites I'm subscribed to via RSS:

- Hacker News (https://news.ycombinator.com) - lacking some of the technical community that it used to have but sometimes has interesting articles
- Inconsolation (https://inconsolation.wordpress.com) - reviews command line utilities. Sadly, the author recently stopped blogging, but there's still some good stuff there.
- Arabesque (http://blog.sanctum.geek.nz) - blog by a sysadmin. Does interesting things with vim/shell configuration and linux crypto.
- idea of the day (https://idea.popcount.org) - some linux stuff, some technical ASM/C stuff.
- Null Program (http://nullprogram.com) - Mostly C, with a smattering of ASM and Linux
- The Freaking Manual (https://snai.pe) - C programming
- BJORN TIPLING (http://bjorn.tipling.com/) - Some amusing programming posts
- z3bra (http://blog.z3bra.org/) - gotta include z3bra, o' course ;)
- ywstd blog (http://ywstd.fr/blog/) - more interesting Linux articles
- Technomancy (http://technomancy.us/list) - regular posting. Some posts are technical, some aren't.
- (http://jasonwryan.com/) - some sysadmin type posts.
- MERCURY AND LIES (https://mercuryandlies.wordpress.com/) - linux (some user-focused posts, i.e. battery indicator)
- Tux Diary (http://tuxdiary.com/) - *lots* of linux posts, util reviews, news posts
- (shameless self-promotion) Charlie the Ninja (http://charliethe.ninja/) - odd technical posts.

nah... reddit is much, much worse (depending upon the subreddit you're on).

HackerNews has *some* good technical people that pop in every once in a while.

@Ninjacharlie:
Oh my god, I love inconsolation.
Thank you so much that you showed this!

I do not think Hacker news is such a bad community (disclaimer: II am not part of it).
What I read in the comments does not seem to bad (compared to reddit in various places, for example).
