Emacs originated in the 1970s as a set of "Editor MACroS" (hence the name Emacs) created by Richard Stallman and Guy L. Steele Jr. at MIT. It began as an extension of the TECO (Text Editor and Corrector) editor. Cmiiw

recently I've found a modern fork of teco named SciTeco which is based on video teco; its basically teco with a full screen capability, and I've using this last week its so much fun. the language is still being developed I don't know if they're gonna keep it compatible with video teco or not.
