Unix Weekly Challenges - DotDev - 18-07-2014

This thread is to combine unix with weekly challenges that are easy, moderate, or hard task to do, example for week one: command line only, once the week is finished you post your results of how it turned out.

If you have any ideas or questions for other weekly challenges post them below.

Week 1: Command line only [Hard]
Week 2: Keyboard only [Hard]
Week 3: Rawish [Hard]
Week 4: No Root [Hardish]

Rawish --- {
shell - ash / dash
wm - tinywm
web - surf
text - ed
irc - ii
file mgr - coreutils (cd,ls,..)
mail - mailx
}--- Rawish

Going source-only for a week. Either source-only for everything including the operating system itself (I'm thinking Gentoo here.) or for your userland-applications (*BSD's ports-collection, pkgsrc, ..). Knowing that some of us already run nearly everything from source that should not be that hard.

Going Plan9-only for a week. Haven't really tried it out myself, but judging by the few things I know about it this could be pretty damn hard to achieve.

Keyboard-only in X for a week. That includes navigating around your window manager / desktop environment as well as writing mails, browsing the net, instant messaging and so on.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - venam - 18-07-2014

What about a "no root week".

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - z3bra - 18-07-2014

use ash for a week, for every shell (interactive only [moderate], or also for scripts [hard])

Or busybox sh instead [insane]

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - DotDev - 18-07-2014

I'm gonna put keyboard only for week 2, nice suggestions shtols

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - vompatti - 18-07-2014

Command line only, I'm in.
Keyboard only in X, I'm in.
Plan9 only, I might be in depends can I do my work on it.
Source only, I'm in.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - shtols - 18-07-2014

I did a bit of research on Plan9 and came up with a hardware compatibility list and the only thing on that list that I might be close of being capable to get my hands on is a Thinkpad x60. Most of the parts listed there is fairly outdated so it seems that virtualisation would be the only real way of accomplishing that challenge.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - z3bra - 18-07-2014

Everybody runs the same environment. No configuration is allowed. Even the wallpaper will be enforced
I'd call this one the "rawish" :
  • shell - ash / dash
  • wm - tinywm
  • web - surf
  • text - ed
  • irc - ii
  • file mgr - coreutils (cd,ls,..)
  • mail - mailx

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - shtols - 18-07-2014

^ I like that idea. As long as the wallpaper is not Goatse. But ed as editor is sadistic.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - vompatti - 19-07-2014

Do we start next week?

Ed is the standard text editor.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - shtols - 20-07-2014

Have we already finished preparation work / decided which weekly challenge comes when? Maybe we should wait another week or so, get more people on board.

So we have to use X? I don't see what's wrong with the text console.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - z3bra - 21-07-2014

Because CLI only week would be done already :)

We'll wait a week, for everyone to prep and get on board, but if people want to start they can we just need a challenge for the final week.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - venam - 23-07-2014

It's going great. I'm spending less time doing stupid things and more time reading.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - DotDev - 25-07-2014

Week One done all i did for this challenge was listen to music more then usual, played vitetris, and learn about tmux. Week Two should be easier than this. How did every ones else challenge week went?

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - z3bra - 25-07-2014

5Pretty nice in fact. I learned to use elinks deeply and find it rather powerful. I also started playing dwarf fortress heavily. I agree that next week will be way easier than this one

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - venam - 25-07-2014

This week was pretty harsh but I learned a few things from it.
On the technical part I got used to working in the TTY in an efficient way, I got angry at utf-8 because it didn't display well, and I wanted my browser back.
Other than that I spent my days in a different manner than in X. I never find myself doing random stupid stuff and wasting time procrastinating like I usually do sometime. I actually got away from the computer earlier at night, spent way more time reading and coding. I appreciated some curses games.
Overall, it was a nice experience.
Oh...and I'm glad to be back in the graphical world!

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - z3bra - 28-07-2014

Happy keyboard week !

This. This would be pretty darn hard.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - dunz0r - 29-07-2014

No root might not be horribly hard... you'd just not be able to install/update anything or change system wide configurations.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - z3bra - 30-07-2014

This weék challenge is relatively easy compared to TTY only. Next week will be nightmare though...

Should we make this post more "official", so that we could propose challenges every week ? (Maybe easier, like no terminal colors, etc...)

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - shtols - 31-07-2014

We should do so. I would especially welcome it to have earlier and more visible announcements.

RE: Unix Weekly Challenges - smlb - 31-07-2014

Keyboard only week is too simple :D
