I kind of like the daemon command from FreeBSD.

It is a nice intermediate between a system service manager (like rc, s6, openrc and the controversial systemd), and running a command in the background in the shell (with after the command).

The standard output and standard error goes onto a syslog.

For instance, I use it on my .xinitrc for starting a notification manager, a "new mail" watchdog program...
