Hello, I'm Maksim and yeah this is yet another self-introduction thread.
I was searching for something about Intel ME and found Venam's Blog, decided to check the base domain and then realized it's a forum. I browsed it for a bit and really liked all the nice threads that are there. Later, when I finally got my hands on self-hosting an email server, I decided to join the forum. Venam assisted me in making an account without using ReCAPTCHA, and I finally became a member of Nixers.
I mainly self-host things on old laptops running Proxmox. My website is not yet finished, but if you wish, you can visit it by going to https://wherelinux.xyz.

Welcome, and thanks for keeping those old laptops out of the landfill! I only use old machines myself -- some would say they're obsolete, but Linux or one of the BSDs gives them a new life. Kinda like giving an old, unwanted dog a new "forever home".

If I remember there was a thread about the oldest hardware we own.

I still think my laptop is new and it's from 2012, meanwhile lots of people think laptops older than 3 years are meant for scrapyard.

All and all, welcome maksim!

The oldest laptop that I think is still viable is a Thinkpad T60. It's a bit older than Core 2 Duo era. The laptops running Proxmox are actually somewhat new, it's just that they are no longer used for daily driving :)
I actually would've happily used some old machine like an old Thinkpad with Libreboot if I had one.

Hello everyone!
I'm gilgal, I just like unix that's all.
I wish I was born when it was born, and I can't get over the fact I can't have it the way it was; the unix room style. having somewhere to hang around other friends while trinkring a terminal punching keys.
currently just usnig plain simple ubuntu for daily stuff, used to hop on all flavours, from arch to freebsd and now settled on plain simple ubuntu because idc they all the same and ubuntu is the easiest to fix.
suprisingly I spend alot of time on termux too, since I got it on my pocket all time.

No, FreeBSD is not even remotely the same thing as Ubuntu.

you're right, It just to me it comes down to be another unix where I can do what I want, so I simply use ubuntu and I can just use it and still have anyone else use it too to share the machine.

howdy, fellow nixers!

I'm Dee (a.k.a deesh), an aspiring graphic designer from Venezuela who likes messing with computers (I also do a bit of programming here and there, but I can't really consider myself a "programmer"). I found out about the forums from the /r/unixporn subreddit, and immediately thought "screw it, I'mma join".

I've been using Linux for the past few years; my first proper experience using a distro was with the Nobara Project during the COVID-19 quarantine, since at the time I was using a pretty old computer that didn't like Windows at all. once I switched to a better device, I started using Arch Linux (btw) as my daily driver, which is how I started learning about things like ricing and the inner workings of Linux as a whole. as of recently though, I switched to NixOS purely out of curiosity, and since then I've been lovin' the experience (although, it's definitely been quite the learning curve).

I'm still technically a newbie, so I'm looking forward to learn a lot of things from the community! <3

Also just in case: according to the FAQ, I was supposed to start a dedicated thread for my introduction, but for some reason I'm not able to (I'm assuming this has something to do with the forums' promotion system?)

EDIT: I was right about this. I'll probably move my introduction into it's own thread later down the line.

Hi everybody,
I'm tabako, you can find me on tilde.club/~tabako where I've recently recovered my account, and I'm trying to learn how to make it work, I'm still fairly new to *nix sphere so forgive my clueless behavior in the future.
I still use Ubuntu, but might migrate to something else in the future if It seems of convenience. I've been using the TTY exclusively in last 2 years, so I learned a lot but still not enough, I mean I can fix all my problems which are rare but not enough to be free from dependency on others to maintain systems and fix deeper level issues, you get the idea.
I wish to learn from this place and help with my questions and ideas. Thank you for providing it.
