Hello fellow Nixers,
This thread is for discussing the Nixers curated newsletter. We jump on irc and many of us share topics and ideas; things we just discovered and find interesting. We all work on different kinds of projects and hold different opinions on a multitude of things. Almost every community or institution possesses their own curated newsletter. This is a reflection of the group as a whole, our mini-expanding-filter-bubble-of-thoughts. We share what we know around the topic of Unix and Unix-tech related as a whole. * Interesting blog posts * Projects done by community members * Events * Thoughts * Jokes and Comics - update header of nixers * Any kind of art related to Unix * Reading recommendations * etc.. This will unfold as follow: Every week people can send the content to me by email, irc, forums PM and at the end of the week 10 of those are chosen to be featured in the newsletter. The person curating the newsletter will rotate as soon as we get enough persons contributing. The newsletters will be sent on weekends. The source can be found here: https://github.com/nixers-projects/newsletter You can sign up here: https://nixers.net/newsletter/ The feed for earlier newsletter (Going to post them one week after the newsletter get sent): https://nixers.net/newsletter/feed.xml Cheers, |

I'd assume something like the podcast; in that there's a discussion thread around a set of ideas/topic, which get fleshed out in the newsletter articles. |

Well, z3bra and, to a lesser extent, myself are working on ratox, a distributed, encrypted messaging application
using the tox protocol. The development is going on at http://git.z3bra.org/ratox/log.html. ratox uses the tox protocol (https://tox.chat) and the toxcore library (https://github.com/irungentoo/toxcore). Atm, one-to-one messaging, file sending and audio calling are possible, all encrypted via libsodium (https://nacl.cr.yp.to). So, if you want to test it, install toxcore, download ratox, compile, read the manpage, and send a request to the id AA72C255E14A6214E0E368F5882A6B7CF235F8F3CCE0321EDBFBC5F2C065E3173337CFD9B594 (sorry z3bra, it changed again for some reason). |

Yes, this would qualify as a project we could link to. I'm thinking of using emails as a mean. The workflow isn't very clear in my mind yet. For the moment I'm just thinking of having people email me, or PM on the forums or irc with links they found interesting. Then We'd have to setup a subscribe/unsubscribe page and a script to send the mail to everyone in the list. We may also need to review the links to X number before sending them. I'm unsure if we'll go with a pre-made solution or not. What are your thoughts? |

Perhaps a central source on unix material (links/books/etc)?
The problem lies in the quantity of responses regarding which source from all over the web. So a local place that nixers typically agree on being a good source of information for those wanting to learn more at the expense of not asking the same questions that im sure most on here or on other sites get tired of answering. |

What about "distributing" the newsletter in RSS format?

An RSS feed is another way to "subscribe" to it. All things considered, it sounds like an easier way to do this instead of mailing list. Just use a feed reader (CLI clients, on-line clients, and Emacs clients are available). Issuing another post is as easy as updating the feed XML and a subscriber getting is as easy as them checking up on it in their client. As for the gory details, a feed reader can cache the current contents of a feed for however many minutes long the <ttl> element says so. Once that time's elapsed, the reader will check for any new updates to the source. |

Personally, I prefer emails, they go well with the idea of ephemeral newsletter, and everyone is already doing it this way. Maybe it's because I've never gotten used to reading anything in RSS feeds and only used it for push notifications. |

I don't have much free time but I will try to contribute. I have some code I written a while ago ( https://github.com/strang3quark/strang3q...nd/rss.php ), I'm using OOP there but I can adapt it to fit the newsletter code if you agree to it. Edit: I am taking a look at the code, where do you plan to store the newsletters? I'm thinking of making a php script to get all those files and output a XML file (the feed). |

I've implemented the RSS support, it isn't the prettiest code I ever made but I think it does the job.
You can check the changes here: https://github.com/nixers-projects/newsl...3quark_rss I've sent the pull request. |

It's great, just needs a little adjustments. If you have something to share for the newsletter please send me a PM, or message me on IRC, or hit me up with an email. The newsletter will be sent every Sunday. |

For those of you who signed up to the newsletter:
First of, sorry for sending the email twice. Seond, sorry about the RSS feed, there are things that need to be fixed (the newsletter is in plain text and rss doesn't like it) Other than that, I'd like to have your opinions on it? What do you like? Also, please feel free to share any interesting links you have, I'll feature them in the next release. Cheers! |

The newsletter is a really cool idea.
I think the way it is currently done is perfect, nothing left to remove. I will try to participate as much as possible so that this can become a long-time project. |

--I'm not getting the newsletter through RSS feed.--
NOTE: Sorry, the feed is fine, I noticed it's a "bug" in my software. I store all feeds in a database and the URL column has "unique" attribute, since all newsletter articles have the same url they are overwritten. |

hope to get my crux system up soon and working on stuff. |

I might be a moron... but I've tried a few different rss readers now. And I cannot get that link to display correctly. Currently using termfeed, and it at least displays something. But everything is jammed together on one line, \n doesn't work, or seemingly any other formatting.

Bump:
Reminder that for the moment I'm filtering the links people send (at least the 2 or 3 I received the last few weeks) but that it's not limited to me, we can take turns for whoever takes care of the newsletter for the week. So keep me updated if some week you feel like putting together the newsletter. |
