Apparently it's been forever and a day since I uplaoded any screen shots anywhere. It's mostly under the hood work, it doesn't look too different from my last ones. I'm using windowchef with chwb2, and approx. 400 scripts heh. Not all at once, not really, no.
The one from reddit. A bonus dual monitor one. EDIT: Be warned, I have tried imgup.net as an attempt to not use teknik. We'll see how that goes. Here's the teknik link: https://u.teknik.io/IZzTj.png. |

I was mocking the top-left square with "Arch" in it. I assume you're monitoring your currently installed distro because that changes a lot, or because you tend to forget it too often ;) (20-02-2017, 11:00 AM)neeasade Wrote: network name You certainly mean SSID you're connected too when you're using the wifi. If so, I must say I don't use wifi enough to need this info. I only connect to networks in my wpa_supplicant.conf, which is fairly short anyway. I do understand the need for it though. (20-02-2017, 11:00 AM)neeasade Wrote: network up/down speed Check out sbm. It does that perfectly well, and per interface. The bad thing is that as speed is expressed in bytes per second, you need to compare the byte flow at 1 second interval (at least) to get a relevant info, meaning your bar won't refresh more often than once per second. (20-02-2017, 11:00 AM)neeasade Wrote: memory usage I personally find these information to be a waste. Why would I care that my memory is at 24%, or temperature at 70°C (is that high? low? normal? I don't know, and don't care). If my legs start getting hot when they touch my computer case, then I know I have a temperature problem. And in this case, the only solution is a reboot anyway, which the computer will do by itself to protect the components. If I am using 100% memory, then the computer will start swapping, which is perfectly fine. If it does for too long, I'll notice because things will get terribly slow. In this case knowing that memory is at 100% will only comfort me that my computer is slow. Same goes for HDD usage. I don't have an SSD, so when I have a big usage, I'll hear it. That's how computers works anyway, I don't need to be aware of everything that's going under the cover at any moment. All I need is a working computer, so I can focus on doing important things, like replying on this forum or insulting noobs on #ubuntu or whatever. (20-02-2017, 11:00 AM)neeasade Wrote: any suggestions/things that might be missing? What about actual informations? Like how much tasks you have in your TODO, the next event in your calendar? How many unread emails you have, or if your s3cr3t VPN is still UP? I think a good rule-of-thumb for statusbar is "informations about things you are in charge of". Computers are wonders of technology that can run themselves, so they can be your tools. Let them do their job so you can do yours! (All rules have exceptions, so I guess this one as well: VOLUME is important! I got scared way too much time by my music player) EDIT: Screenshot, because it's been a while! |

We overestimate how useful some things are and how much time we'll actually be looking at them. |

I actually haven't thought about this approach. Yet, I have to object about RAM and CPU usage. I have a pretty good understanding of how much RAM and CPU should be in use at any time on my system (approximately). If I see my indicators display a lot more than they should, I know that something might cause trouble. And from there on, I can investigate and check.

I check my RAM quite often through whatever means. It usually notifies me I forgot to close an mpv socket, I didn't close a browser properly (I'm still not sure how the fuck that happens on a rare occasion) or most likely I need to clsoe and restart chromium (for netflix) because bloated resource hog. Sure, you can use popups instead of a bar. Either way, I'd rather see my RAM is nearing full capacity before anything happens, than not at all. |

If I see my indicators display a lot more than they should, I know that something might cause trouble. And from there on, I can investigate and check. Let's say you're doing random things, and then you notice you're using 60% RAM instead of your usual 25%. You will start investigating, and after spending roughly 30 minutes of running `free -m` 4 times, `ps auxf` 6 times, reading the `top` manpage to know how to sort by memory usage, googling the meaning of VSZ, RSS, you'll either find out that your RAM usage is back to normal, or that you left a browser open with a video, that's causing no harm anyway because you still have 3.2Gib of RAM available for running your terminal + weechat window. And even if you manage to fill those 8gigs, the computer will start swapping on your SSD, and you will only notice because your status bar displays "RAM: 93%", not because things gets slower. The only reason to care about your RAM/CPU usage is when you start noticing that your computer doesn't run at its full potential. And when it does (I'm speaking for me at least), I truly notice it. My mouse start jumping 50 pixels away, windows refuse to move, applications take longer to start.. When it does, I just pop a terminal, make it full screen and start investigating. Last time it happened because I was running a system upgrade in the background, and compiling gcc was eating all the RAM (not even CPU because it's tied to 1 core). By running `free -m`, I noticed my swap was disabled, so I reenabled it and was of to go, while memory was still ~90% usage. |

I have 3.9 ... :| For me, I'd rather not wait until that level of insanity happens, besides any instance of lag prevents me from typing correctly. Call it PTSD from running Windows and BSODs. But, I watched my girlfriends laptop shut itself down in the middle of doing a bunch of shit because she went over capacity in RAM using Linux. 'Course I told her not to run chromium, slack, steam, and some other giant hog all at once. I'd rather prevent the issue before it arises. While you're argument makes sense, and this is interesting to read. You should only have to waste that much time investigating the first time, anytime after that you should know the culprit(s) in question. I'd say people come at it from different angles, and to each his own. As for more things to monitor, I'd say one that is like watching a pot boil is downloads to finish? Perhaps. The more you stare at it the slower it feels, so just forgetting about it. But then seeing it finished might be nice. There was some posts I had bookmarked, but it looks like a lot were deleted. The first two may be of no help because of that. The latter three I have reuploaded, they may have been by earsplit, he deleted most of his stuff... https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/y67t2/ https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/4tklii/ http://i.imgur.com/HaPWp9w.gif http://i.imgur.com/12AW8OP.gif http://i.imgur.com/DIUthaM.gif They may or may not help in giving you any ideas at all. I'm really digging that color scheme, Mafia. I might use it as inspiration next time I re-rice.

Thanks man. I've actually put a pretty outrageous amount of work into my workflow, scripting abilities and such. The colors have seemingly only subtlety shifted over the year or so I've been using Linux. I am partially colorblind, so it's not my strongsuit. I always enjoy multiple borders.
I actually have two blue verisons of the wallpaper, one lighter, one darker, and two black variations for night time. I had lucked out in already using blue when I read about the concentration thing venam posted. Had unfortunately been using it at night too though, the black seems to be helping. I have since also figured out and fixed rtv not using the right blue for it's statusline-like areas. Also I really liked your last post on here, some unique elements I hadn't seen in your other stuff. |

After using i3 for several years, I decided to give a full-blown DE a shot just to see how it goes. While I'm not the biggest fan of Arch Linux, I also decided to give it another shot. While this isn't the most original rice, I like the way it turned out, kind of going for a synthwave-y vibe. Props to xero for the awesome Sourcerer nvim color scheme.
